Utica & Marcellus Shale - The Potential Of Tapping In

There's been a frenzy of activity in the Utica and Marcellus shale zone. Almost daily, articles and reports on Utica or Marcellus Shale appear in the media. Why all the hype?  Simply put, Utica shale alone has an estimated worth in the billions.  Landowners in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia may be sitting on a shale goldmine. Energy companies have taken great interest in the potential supply of natural gas trapped in the shale within these areas, and are competing to secure mineral rights and leases in order to harvest the gas.

According to geology.com, this map shows the geographic extent of what is suspected to be Utica shale source rock. Geologists believe this portion has the potential to yield natural gas.

Although the direct economic benefits to the Utica and Marcellus shale regions will consist primarily of royalties and lease payments, the development of these areas will have a positive impact on the local and national economies.
